Controlled ventilation of living space plays a role both in low energy houses and older buildings. In low energy houses the controlled ventilation provides the desired air exchange while the doors and windows are closed.
Upon refurbishing of older buildings a better thermal insulation as well as new windows could be installed so that the air exchange could be effected through controlled ventilation. As older buildings are often also affected by noise of the street, a deaeration installation could be very helpful.
When there is uncontrolled ventilation of living space or controlled ventilation without heat recovery, the energy inherent in the indoor air is not being used.
The demand for air infiltration heat represents a considerable part (40 up to 50%) of the total heat demand. The controlled ventilation of living space with heat recovery makes use of the energy inherent in the exhaust air. The additional internal heat from illumination, people and appliances is being well exploited through the heat recovery. The controlled ventilation with heat recovery is both healthy and comfortable and, in addition to this, the heat energy consumption and consequently the CO2 emission can be considerably reduced.
